How to Choose the Right Fragrance Oil for Your Candles

Velvet Supplies Team20 November 20254 min read

Choosing the right fragrance oil is one of the most important decisions in candle making. The scent is often what draws people to a candle, so getting it right is crucial.

Understanding Fragrance Types

Top Notes These are the scents you smell first — they're bright and fresh but fade quickly. Examples include citrus, mint, and light florals.

Middle Notes Also called heart notes, these form the body of the fragrance. They emerge as top notes fade. Examples include lavender, rose, and cinnamon.

Base Notes These are deep, rich scents that linger the longest. Examples include vanilla, sandalwood, and musk.

The best candle fragrances combine all three for a complex, evolving scent experience.

Key Factors to Consider

Flash Point The flash point is the temperature at which a fragrance oil can ignite. For soy candles, choose fragrances with a flash point above 65°C. Always add fragrance below its flash point.

Scent Throw - **Cold throw**: How the candle smells when unlit - **Hot throw**: How the candle smells when burning

Test both before committing to a large batch. Some fragrances smell wonderful in the bottle but have poor hot throw.

Wax Compatibility Not all fragrance oils work well with all wax types. Soy wax can typically hold 8-10% fragrance load, while paraffin can hold up to 12%. Always check the manufacturer's recommended usage rate.

Testing Your Fragrances

  1. Make a small test candle (100g wax)
  2. Let it cure for at least one week
  3. Burn it in a medium-sized room
  4. Note the cold throw, hot throw, and how the scent evolves over time
  5. Keep a fragrance journal to track your results

Popular Fragrance Families for Candles

Our Recommendation

Start with 3-4 fragrances from different families. This gives you variety and helps you understand what works best with your specific wax and wick combination.
